Luke Teikō Cunningham teaches piano with a focus on nurturing creative musical expression. Combining disciplined practice with playfulness, Luke encourages students to connect deeply with the instrument, helping them discover and cultivate their unique musical voice. Rather than emphasising formal examinations, he priorities the joy of musical exploration and personal growth.
With a rich background in jazz performance and Zen practice, Luke values the balance between spontaneity and structure, form and formless. Improvisation plays a key role in his approach to both teaching and playing, but always within the framework of a strong technical foundation. His approach to teaching is attentive, fostering both the artistry and technique essential for a fulfilling piano path.

Lessons are held at my home near the Shore in Leith. I am currently unable to offer home visits.
I teach mainly from September to July, taking breaks in August and during the school holidays in April and October.
No. Lessons are only available Monday to Friday.
Yes. The first lesson is booked individually, after which lessons are scheduled in blocks of four. Payment for each block is required in advance.
Weekly lessons: A set time-slot each week, reserved in my diary for the month. Payment is made in blocks of four lessons.
Flexi lessons: Book lessons on a pay-as-you-go basis. You request a session, I confirm availability, and payment is made at the time of booking (except for cash payments).
Student cancellations: To maintain a consistent schedule for all students, lessons cancelled with less than one week’s notice are charged in full, including situations such as illness or emergencies to maintain schedule consistency.
Rescheduling: If a reschedule is needed, it must take place within one week and is dependent on availability in the Teacher’s schedule. Rescheduled lessons cannot be transferred or credited to future blocks.
Teacher cancellations: If the Teacher cannot deliver a scheduled lesson, it will be carried forward to another date.
Late arrivals: Lessons begin and end at the scheduled times. If the Student arrives more than 15 minutes late, the lesson is considered missed and the full fee applies. No extra time or rescheduling will be added.
No. I can prepare students for ABRSM, Trinity, or Rockschool exams if needed, but I don’t require exams and generally prefer not to rely on them. I use material from graded books and the Henle system to build a clear, personalised progression for each student without making exams the focus.
