Debut Album ‘Shuna’ Out Now!

Bio

Sekoya is a contemporary jazz collective drawing on their love of soul, electronic, world, folk and jazz music. Their modern influences in include the likes of Esbjorn Svensson, Espen Eriksen, Björk, Brad Mehldau, Gogo Penguin, Mammal Hands, Hania Rani, Avishai Cohen, Aaron Parks, Charlie Grey & Joseph Peach, Yussef Dayes, Tigran Himasyan, and Hiromi.

Formed in Glasgow in late-2021, Sekoya is the result of 10 years of collaboration between 3 active composers, musicians and friends, sidemen on the scene for several years, coming together to make their own dream project. All three members contribute equally to the writing process: one that favours the creation of a powerful group dynamic over individual solos. They have forged their own path and their sound grew out of long improvised rehearsals/ meditations. The intention has always been to write interplay music that expresses their lives, inspired by European jazz, soul, minimalism, electronic music, and reflecting (diverse and dynamic) Scottish modernity. They each brought their own backgrounds and histories; playing nu-jazz, folk, rock, soul, blues, Scottish trad and modern textural orchestral music; and found joy in playing together.

On the strength of their initial demo, recorded on the banks of Loch Fyne, they were invited by Court Square Recordings to fly across the Atlantic to Memphis, TN and record their debut album 'Shuna'. This massively exciting opportunity was made all the more special as a great friend of the band, David Hagen, joined them for the full 10 days in order to create a documentary capturing the process of making the album. The album was released on the 6th of October 2024, and the limited edition 2xLP including a copy of the documentary are available now!

a beautifully crafted piece of work.

Sekoya is an interdisciplinary trio combining their Scots intonation of Europe’s version of the international language of Jazz with articulate rhythms and soulful grooves to create a genre-defying musical entanglement uniquely their own. Vibrant Celtic-inspired piano melodies are interwoven with flowing bass lines over a foundation of propulsive drums creating an almost cinematic sound. The amalgam of these three instrumentalists is a singular sonic spirit, with a focus on energy and interplay.
