Debut Album ‘Shuna’ Out Now!

Bio

Sekoya is a contemporary jazz group consisting of Simon Toner on Double Bass, Gavin Lamont on drums and Luke Teikō Cunningham on Piano. Their music is rich yet simple with ever-flowing and evolving textures drawing inspiration from a diverse range of musical influences, including European jazz, soul, minimal electronic, contemporary classical, folk, and Scottish trad. This unique blend of genres creates a genre-defying musical entanglement that is distinctly their own. Vibrant yet subtle piano melodies intertwine with flowing bass lines over a foundation of articulate and soulful grooves, evoking an almost cinematic sound. The amalgamation of these three instrumentalists results in a singular sonic spirit, characterised by energy and interplay.

Some modern influences include artists such as Esbjörn Svensson, Espen Eriksen, Björk, Brad Mehldau, Gogo Penguin, Mammal Hands, Hania Rani, Avishai Cohen, Charlie Grey, and Joseph Peach, Yussef Dayes, Brian Blade, and Hiromi.

Formed in Glasgow in late 2021, Sekoya is the result of a decade-long collaboration between three active composers, musicians, and friends. These sidemen, who have been on the scene for several years, came together to create their own dream project. All three members contribute equally to the writing process, distilling a unique sound through many long improvised rehearsals and meditations, always favouring the creation of a powerful group dynamic over individual solos.

The band’s initial demos caught the attention of Court Square Recordings in Memphis, Tennessee, where they recorded their debut album, ‘Shuna’.  David Hagen, a talented filmmaker, joined the band, documenting the album’s creation in a feature-length film that is yet to be released. The album is now streaming everywhere, and a deluxe double LP is available.

Sekoya continues to find simple joy in playing together and collaborating to discover who they are and what their style is.

a beautifully crafted piece of work.
